Poiesis and Virtue Epistemology: Toward the Virtuous Design and Use of Digital Technologies for Epistemic Purposes

Digital technologies are an indispensable part of our everyday practices of generating, storing, and acquiring knowledge; we also know that they are designed to be persuasive and influence our behaviour. Existing research acknowledges that digital technologies have complicated social processes of acquiring knowledge. This project examines whether usingdigital technologies, such as search engines, social-networking-sites, smartphones, and natural language generators (e.g, ChatGPT), to produce knowledge requires cultivating specific cognitive skills and intellectual character traits. It interrogates how designers of technologies influence our practices of knowing and whether they should guide the cultivation of these skills and character traits.
