英文摘要
In this project, I will explore variations in ceramic vessel use in Roman Britain through organic residueanalysis of funerary vessels from three distinct burial contexts. Continuity and change in burialpractices and vessel use can be seen on a regional level over the course of the Roman period (Cool2004: 466; Williams 2005). For example, evidence from South-East England demonstrates thenumber of accessory vessels deposited in graves decreased over the 3rd and 4th centuries, comparedwith earlier funerary traditions (Philpott, 1991). These broader trends in Romano-British burialtraditions raise questions about the function of pottery in funerary contexts, for example: where didthe vessels come from, why were they chosen, and what did they contain?
