This research project will focus on an interdisciplinary focuson climate litigation and its impact as a legal tool of socialmovement activism on development. Within this topic, Iquestion initially whether climate litigation can beconsidered a tool of legal social activism for developmentand, thereafter under what conditions this is possible.Climate litigation presents an array of environmentaldevelopmental possibilities, which is displayed through therecent successes of cases such as 'Lliuya v. RWE AG' and'Leghari v. Federation of Pakistan'. These cases show thatthis could promise the possibility of mass social movementactivism through climate litigation. It provides a platformwhere vulnerable groups can advocate for their owndevelopmental priorities and policy change, especially forthe protection of their environment. This research willemploy theoretical research in social movement theory,public policy and environmental development and applythis to inductive research of case studies and legalpractices. This presents a vital opportunity to presentacademic research between environmental policy anddevelopment, and consider the idea of a new form of socialmovement practice that could have widespread effects inthe future.
