The student will develop unique 'tongue' sensors for non-specific chemical and biological sensing applications. Built at the nanoscale from gold and aluminium, these tongue sensors are capable of detecting tiny differences between complex chemical mixtures. The technology has so far been proven for use in beverage production and water monitoring applications. The aim of this PhD will be to explore biological and diagnostic applications for the first time using such a system. The student will initially explore standard biochemical interactions used in conventional SPR tools (e.g. simple interactions between proteins, antibodies, etc.) before moving on to more complex interactions and to diagnostics with biologically representative samples.
