Recently the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC) has become the second most important trade partner of Latin America. Nevertheless, the genesis of this relationship has been largely disregarded by historians. This research aims to analyse the cornerstone period of the establishment of wide-ranging relationships between China and Latin American states. Through two fundamental aspects of the exchange between these nations from 1949 to 1976, this study aims to investigate 1. The multilateral policies and cultural exchanges that influenced China-inspired Latin American communist movements , especially concerning the Sino-Soviet rivalry, and 2. the Sino-Latin American state-to-state diplomatic efforts, especially within the Sino-US reconciliation context. As both themes are intrinsic to understanding the origins of the PRC-Latin American ties, this study will shed light on the multipolar pulls that were decisive in these developments.
