英文摘要
Audiovisual technologies were central to the global dissemination of ideologies and practices of modernisation and development as a new world order emerged after World War Two. In their efforts to forge an international system of peace, security and solidarity, the United Nations, UNESCO and other bodies stimulated development and citizenship projects that aimed to shape the future of peripheral regions, and devised global media strategies to further these aims. This project explores the archives and histories of the resulting audiovisual projects in the context of European-Latin American relations, focusing on non-canonical audiovisual materials including documentaries, educational films, newsreel, and television. It asks what their goals were; how they were taken up and reencoded on the ground; and how they enabled the creation of international networks of filmmakers and filmmaking practices between both regions. The primary research will be international in scope. As a global history of internationalist institutional documentary, it will involve consulting film and documentary archives in the UK, France, Denmark, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia, some of them rarely consulted in work of this nature, and builds on my previous research at a UNESCO archive in Mexico. Using a set of geographic and thematic clusters, I will approach my object of study through an interdisciplinary lens that combines film history, cultural history, close audiovisual analysis, and cultural studies. I am a UK national proposing UKRI Postdoctoral Fellowship in London after sixteen years living in Mexico City, working as a full-time researcher at UNAM since 2010. The project will build on my strong existing academic links between UK and Mexican institutions, expanding my network towards countries in continental Europe. It will involve extensive international collaboration with audiovisual archives, and the acquisition of new skills to engage audiences beyond academia via online and other media.
