EU microplastics regulations on synthetic polymer particles requiresphasing out non-biodegradable capsule materials. Most polymers usedfor core-shell capsule formulations of pesticides are based oninterfacial polymerization using diisocyanate and polyamines and arenot biodegradable. FMC has developed unique biodegradablechemistry and this project aims to develop batch and continuousprocess options for multiple formulations, each with their own uniqueconsiderations: testing and selecting appropriate equipment,developing parameter windows for optimized yield and kinetics, andproviding feedback to the chemist on ingredient selection. This projectcould take the direction of process optimization or process simulationvia CFD and control. This work will be used to build an IP estate forchemistry and process. The experimental work would be carried out atthe Stine Research Center in Newark, Delaware.
