This is a PhD research project in Physics. Accurate positioning, navigation and timing underpins a range of modern technology, most notably the global positioning system (GPS). The accuracy of timing provided by GPS satellites is limited by current Caesium standards. While better standards for space deployment exist, they are bigger, more complex, and thus far more expensive. Protocols have now emerged which exploit timing correlations in quantum light used for quantum communication to keep clocks on satellites synchronised to an accuracy greater than can be achieved with current Cs standards. This project will explore bi-directional timing protocols between an entangled-photon satellite payload and a ground station.
