The production of knowledge has been demonstrated as being integral in shaping the British Empire. However, studies of imperial knowledge production have thus far centred upon colonial administrators and scientists, with the contributions made by the integral merchant communities yet to receive the necessary attention. This project will demonstrate how British merchant communities were integral in the intellectual landscape that came to shape the British Empire. Through doing so, this research seeks to broaden our understanding of the role of mercantile actors and to challenge the who is centred within intellectual history and the history of science.
