The Construction of the Indigenous Australian in London, 1770-1810

My research intends to understand the ways in which a stereotypical image of Indigenous Australian peoples was created in London in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. This will be done through analysing different genres of source from the time, including, but not limited to, published explorer's journals, government records, poems, theatrical calendars, letters and artwork. Through this, we will elucidate how the native peoples of Australia were understood in London, the heart of empire, in this period.
