The research concerns a cornerstone of high-speed aerodynamics - unsteady SBLI behaviour at low Reynolds number conditions - and is relevant to applications including transonic aircraft, hypersonic spaceplanes, and Martian entry vehicles. The study will develop and apply state-of-the-art experimental facilities (Hiralal Patel Supersonic Wind Tunnel) and computational tools (PyFR). The development of these complementary capabilities (both of which are unique to Imperial) will generate detailed datasets and facilitate future studies that avoid the historical mismatch between experimental and low-fidelity (RANS) computational approaches to SBLI research and shed new light on the nature of unsteady SBLI at low Reynolds number.
