英文摘要
The predicament of literature in apartheid South Africa put the most fundamental tenets of literary historiography in question. This project, which uses the vast body of original archival evidence relating to various institutions concerned with the literary, including censorship, publishing, and education, addresses this challenge head on and proposes a radical new way of writing about the category of the literary in history. Though it focuses on South Africa between the 1950s and the early 1990s, it also examines the ways in which its literatures were relayed around the world, particularly in the US and the UK.
