This is a book-length study of the work of Iciar Bollain, a Spanish filmmaker who has risen to prominence through performances in award-winning films and work as director /scriptwriter. Bollain is only the second woman to have received the Best Director award from the Spanish Academy. This project analyses her work as a whole, raising, in particular, questions of authorship, the overlaps of documentary and fiction, and social realism, It places her work within the context of Spanish culture and society, focussing on key issues such as gender, subjectivity, the relations between the sexes, siblings, domestic violence and immigration.
