项目摘要
The present monograph will deal with a central set of interacting and overlapping linguistic features pertaining to the Irish language dialects of North-west Donegal, Ireland.General and background issues include the following: the nature of the data collected which lies at the heart of the study; the linguistic history of the Northern Irish dialects of Ireland during the last 250 years; the interaction of contact languages and varieties, namely, Irish, Scots and English; the dynamics of dialectal change and the future of Irish in what is now a dominant Irish language bilingual area.At the very core of the monograph will be a number of chapters dealing with the phonetics and phonological make-up of the dialect, clausal variation vis-a-vis other dialects of Irish, lexical usage and extended semantic use of borrowed vocabulary; a typological description of a variety of syntactic features particular to the dialect and an account of the sociolinguistic variation within the dialect taking various demographic factors into account. In addition, the monograph will focus on the extention of certain peculiar word orderings and other syntactic features such as Wh-constructions, case marking and syntactic movement across a variety of sentence types. These features are of great importance in analysing and contributing to the development of modern linguistic theories. Each chapter will draw comparisons with other national dialectal varieties as reported in published literature.
