This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The experiment will examine the efficacy of UBI¿s therapy for allergy in a relevant animal model (baboons). The UBI allergy therapeutic contains a piece of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody. [IgE antibodies are the antibodies that react against allergens and cause most allergic reactions.] The piece of IgE in the UBI therapy was produced by chemical synthesis and has been combined with various vaccine components. Therefore the UBI therapy has been designed to act as a vaccine that elicits protective antibodies against the individual¿s own IgE. Accordingly, the vaccine will neutralize the ability of any IgE to cause allergic reactions. This therapeutic anti-IgE immune response is specifically directed against only the targeted piece of IgE, while having no effect on normal antibodies. This IgE vaccine approach to allergy therapy has the additional advantage that it will be effective therapy for all IgE-mediated allergies with no need to identify or tailor treatment for specific allergens such as tree and grass pollens, animal danders, dust mites, etc.
