CIMA (caspase-independent mitotic apoptosis) is a novel mitotic cell death that we have recently found. This cell death occurs when Bub1 (a spindle checkpoint protein kinase)- deficient cells have defects in the kinetochore-microtubule attachment. To define the morphological futures (particularly mitochondria) of this novel type of cell death, Kitigawa plans to perform transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography.
