NEURONAL REMODELING AFTER RETINAL DETACHMENT AND DURING RECOVERY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We will use an established animal model of retinal detachment and reattachment to sutdy the remodeling of photoreceptor synapses and neurons. This neuronal remodeling may underlie the mechanisms for the imperfect recovery of visiion that often occurs after successful reattachment srugery. The information is relevant to undertanding the fundamental mechanisms underlying the retina¿s reaction to trauma and it may also hold clues to therapies for other blinding disorders.
