METABOLIC CORRELATES OF FUNCTIONAL MRI: HIV NEUROCOGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The overall goal of this project is to develop and validate a method for concurrent measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and glucose metabolism using multimodal imaging with MRI and PET. Recently optimized arterial spin labeled (ASL) perfusion technique in subprojects 0008, 0053 and 0061 is used to evaluate the effects of HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment on caudate blood flow and volume. Decreasing trends in caudate blood flow and volume were associated with significantly increasing HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment (HNCI), with the greatest decreases observed for more severely impaired patients.
