This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. Functional MRI studies rely on changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) as a surrogate measure of changes in metabolism and neural activity. In various pathological states and possibly even in some physiological states, there may be an uncoupling between these parameters. This project will develop and test a unique multimodal imagaing technique combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) infusion and subsequent FDG positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to measure cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism concurrently.
