This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Type I insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus affects approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. alone. Despite the development of exogenous insulin and multiple portocols evaluating its mode of delivery, type I diabetics suffer multiple complications due to the lack of consistent glucose homeostasis. Type I diabetics usually only have deficiency in the endocrine function of the pancreas, and therefore only require replacement of the Islets of Langerhans. Pancreatic islet transplantation is a biologic replacement strategy that attempts to replace the insulin producing Islets of Langerhans and represents a potential cure for the disease process. The goal of this study is to determine if pancreatic islet transplantation, via the normal endocrine axis of the pancreas, can achieve either insulin independence or a significant decrease in insulin requirements in 10 consecutive type I diabetic patients.
