Hypersensitivity vasculitis in some children with connective tissue disease is characterized by increased blood levels of neopterin and von Willebrand factor antigen. Active vasculitis is associated with inflammation (measured by increased macrophage derived neopterin levels) and/or endothelial cell damage (measured by increased von Willebrand factor antigen). Corticosteroids are the drugs of choice for many pediatric rheumatic diseases, which have a component of vasculitis, but there is controversy concerning the route of administration. The purpose of this study is to ascertain if active vasculitis is associated with decreased bioavailability of absorption of oral prednisolone when compared with values obtained when this substance is given by the intravenous route (methylprednisolone).
