英文摘要
EXCEED THE SPACE
PROVIDED.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H) requests continued support for the
operation of the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) at Memorial Hermann Hospital (MHH). The
UTHSC - H is located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest Medical Center in the World. In
operation since 1984, the UCRC continues to grow and be utilized by a wide diversity of investigators from
the UTHSC - Medical School and 8 other institutions in the TMC. In 2003, projects from the MDAnderson
Cancer Center, the Texas Heart Institute andthe UTHSC- H School of Nursing, School of Public Health, the
Brown Institute for Molecular Medicine, Dental Branch, Mental Sciences Institute and the Graduate School
of Biological Sciences represented 16% of our protocols and utilized 26% of our ancillaries' budget. When
compared to our previous competitive renewal, we have increased the number of visits by 75%, and doubled
the number of approved protocols and publications. With the support of MHH, a new UCRC with twice the
capacity will be operational in the winter of 2004. Continued funding will enable us to conduct novel studies
to understand and treat aortic aneurysms, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, Ewing's sarcoma, infectious diarrhea
due to enteroaggregative E. coli, diabetes in children and their families, autoimmune disorders such as
scleroderma, and clinically significant obesity, among other clinical research projects that are ongoing or
planned. Support is also requested to a) Continue the operations of our genotyping and sequencing core
laboratory at the UCRC, b) Support a cooperative effort of the 5 GCRCs in Texas to conduct off site clinical
research in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) in South Texas. This facility will host regional projects
developed by local investigators in the LRGV region as well as for new and existingprojects from all GCRCs
in Texas and in the future other GCRCs located out of Texas. This model will allow ei'fective utilization of
resources and provide access to patient oriented clinical research for a traditionallyunderserved Hispanic
population with health access disparities c) Continue the Clinical Research Feasibility Funds program, and
d) Continue the UTHSC - H UCRC Mentored Medical Student Research Program.
