EFFECT OF A PROTEASE INHIBITOR-CONTAINING OR A NON-PROTEASE INHIBITOR-CONTAINING

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of this prospective study is to determine whether non-protease inhibitor-based combination antiretroviral therapy results in less endothelial dysfunction than a protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimen in HIV-infected subjects. Following baseline evaluations and randomization to either a regimen with or without a protease inhibitor containing regimen, evaluations will be repeated and subjects will be switched to protease inhibitors or non-protease inhibitor containing regimens. Evaluations including a DEXA scan, glucose clamp studies, and blood tests will be repeated at twenty-four weeks. Twenty-four subjects are anticipated to enroll. Subjects will have 12 visits in this six month study.
