EFFECT OF A PROTEASE INHIBITOR-CONTAINING OR A NON-PROTEASE INHIBITOR-CONTAINING

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this prospective study is to determine whether non-protease inhibitor-based combination antiretroviral therapy results in less endothelial dysfunction than a protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimen in HIV-infected subjects. Following baseline evaluations and randomization to either a regimen with or without a protease inhibitor containing regimen, evaluations will be repeated and subjects will be switched to protease inhibitors or non-protease inhibitor containing regimens. Evaluations including a DEXA scan, glucose clamp studies, and blood tests will be repeated at twenty-four weeks. Twenty-four subjects are anticipated to enroll. Subjects will have 12 visits in this six month study.
