RESEARCH ON OPTIMAL RECOVERY PRACTICES

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to evaluate interventions designed to enhance the health and well being of 200 women post surgery with stage I-III breast cancer. Women will be randomized to either usual care consisting of patient education and counseling or a program of lymphedema prevention and a comprehensive tailored exercise program. The primary outcomes of interest from treatment are the FACT (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy), Quality of Life scores, and lymphedema status at 18 months. Participants will be recruited primarily from Forsyth County using NCBH and Novant health care organizations.
