STUDY OF BMS-247550 IN PATIENTS WITH CANCER OF THE HEAD AND NECK

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Standard therapy for advanced cancer of the head and neck is to give chemotherapy. There are a number of chemotherapy drugs which can shrink head and neck cancers, unfortunately they control the disease only in some patients, and not permanently. For this reason, more effective treatments are needed. This research is being done because there is evidence from early clinical studies in humans and from animal studies, that a new kind of chemotherapy drug may be effective even when more standard drugs do not work well. BMS-247550 is an experimental chemotherapy drug that is similar to a parent drug called Epothilone B. The purpose of this study is to find out whether BMS-247550 is effective against this type of head and neck cancer, and also to find out what kinds of side effects the drug will have on patients.
