This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The specific aim of this research project is to explore 2 factors that may facilitate weight loss and long term maintenance of weight loss: patterns of weight loss (continuous vs. intermittent periods of small amounts of weight loss and 2-week periods of weight maintenance), and program variables (traditional weight loss and group with prescribed diets and behavior modifications vs. weight management group that emphasises meaning of the condition to the subject and readiness to change). These two factors have been under-explored in the research literature on weight management. Contributions of this nature to the research are important due to the increasing prevalence of obesity and co-morbidities, as well ad the associated increasing health care costs. [1] By determining if the two factors noted above are associated with improved long term maintenance of weight loss, further work can be pursued to add to the body of research literature on strategies to maximize long term weight loss.
