This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This research is being conducted to assess the use of indocyanine green (IC-Green) to determine liver function during a course of radiation. The belief is that if we can better estimate the risk of toxicity on an individual basis that radiation can be stopped in patients at high risk for complications before the complications occur. Subjects who take part in this research must be 18 or older. No exclusion will be made based on gender, ethnicity or race. Pregnant women will be excluded from participating. Patients who take part in this study are required to be scheduled for radiation to the liver. For the purposes of this research, they will undergo IC-GREEN testing within 2 weeks prior to the start of radiation therapy, at approximately 20-27 Gy, at approximately 40-54 Gy, approximately one month after radiation, and approximately two months after radiation. Blood samples will be collected at 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes following I.V. administration of IC-Green. The goal of the trial is to assess the effect of radiation treatment on liver function as determined by IC-Green extraction. The researchers believe that if they can determine the chances that a patient getting radiation to the liver might experience severe side effects that the radiation can be stopped in those patients at highest risk before the complications occur.
