This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Evaluation of emtricitabine as a treatment for HIV infection in Pediatric Patients is necessary to develop new antiretroviral medications that provide simple and convenient treatment regimens with a potent and durable response. The strategy for the clinical development of emtricitabine for the treatment of HIV Infection in pediatric patients is a two-step process with the goal of providing a dosing guideline in children. The first step is to determine the plasma profiles and the second step is to explore the long-term safety and antiretroviral activity of emtricitabine when used with other antiretroviral medications.
