This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of inflammatory stimuli (things that can activate a person's own immune system) on the response of a healthy person's immune cells to that person's own proteins. These studies are part of a research project about the autoimmune disease Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system makes a destructive response toward the body's normal joint proteins, such as cartilage proteins. We currently are studying the ability of human blood cells to convert these joint proteins into forms recognizable by the immune system.
