This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary objective of this study is to differentiate the relative risks/benefit of four major AEDs in the treatment of women with epilepsy in terms of their children's neurobehavioral development after in utero exposure. The potential consequences of such cognitive and behavioral deficites in humans are severe in terms of both personal and societal costs. The results of the study will impact the clinical management of women receiving these medications, determine which of the major AEDs is safest in regard to neurobehavioral development and therefore improve the health of their children.
