This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Catheters have been used for obtaining invasive human data, tissue specimens, and used in the delivery of fluids and medications. When using catheters placed in an endoluminal or endobronchial pathway, it can be difficult to manually maneuver the device. The level of difficulty depends on the human anatomy and the distance the catheter needs to be advanced. Steretaxis, Inc. has designed the MNS (Magnetic Navigation System) which has been used for numerous medical interventions. The use of this technology is currently being explored in cardiac catheterization procedures. There is proven safety and efficacy in cardioelectrophysiology with magnetic guidance use in ablation interventions. Studies utilizing magnetic force with neurosurgical cases have also been performed. The application of magnetic force technology in lung nodule tissue acquisition is very promising. It is hypothesized that the MNS will provide an improvement in nodule acquisition at the equal level of safety found in standard bronchoscopy.
