BINGE EATING: CLINICAL PATTERNS AND BIOLOGICAL CORRELATES

The purpose of this study is to determine if the size of binge-eating episodes in bulimia nervosa is associated with greater levels of impulsiveness, lower levels of satiety, and blunted cholecystokinin (CCK) response following ingestion of a test meal. Previous research has suggested the women with bulimia nervosa compared to normal control women report lower levels of satiety following consumption of a test meal and release lower levels of CCK. CCK is a hormone produced in the intestines that triggers sensations of satiety. Thus binge episodes in bulimia nervosa may partially result from deficient satiety signals. However, these findings could be associated with other features of bulimia nervosa such as purging or dietary restraint. Additionally, recent research has challenged the validity of defining binge episodes according to the amount of food consumed. This study would compare women with bulimia nervosa with objectively large binge eating episodes, women who would be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa except that they do not consume large amounts of food when they binge, and non-eating disordered control females.
