This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Several investigations have shown that acute exercise and exercise training can have positive effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in both healthy and glucose-intolerant subjects. Aerobic endurance training has been the focus of most research, although interest in resistance training and its effects on glucose uptake has increased recently. Utilization of glucose during exercise is dependent upon the intensity and duration of the exercise session. To date, little is known about the effects that different exercise intensities, of equal workloads during a single session of resistance training, may have on glucose uptake. Previous work examining the effects of exercise intensity on glucose uptake has not utilized resistance training sessions of equal work volumes, thus making it difficult to determine an optimum level of resistance training intensity that enhances glucose uptake. The purpose of this research investigation will be to examine glucose uptake in response to a session of high-intensity resistance training and a session of low-intensity resistance training, where both training sessions are of equal training volume. Glucose uptake will be monitored during a hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test procedure. Each individual will participate in a clamp procedure after no exercise for a control measurement, and the morning after the completion of the high- and low-intensity training sessions.
