This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to see how obstructive sleep apnea affects erectile function and hormone levels. We are looking at insulin resistance, an underlying cause of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance occurs when the body fails to respond properly to the insulin it already produces. This study is examining whether people who have obstructive sleep apnea have insulin resistance that may be worsening their sexual function. We will be treating all patients with continuous positive airway pressure, the standard of care for patients with sleep apnea. In addition, half the patients will receive a drug used initially in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes that helps the body become more sensitive to insulin. We hope that it will improve erectile dysfunction as well.
