This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study aims to determine the effect of acute exertionally-induced hypertension on endothelial function in athletes. Up to 132 male athletes, ages 18-40, will be recruited primarily from local health clubs. These will include groups of runners or weight lifters who do or do not perform upper body weight lifting (n = 32-33), and a group of sedentary individuals. Women are not included, as this protective effect has been demonstrated in men but not women. A pre-study evaluation will include serum lipids and a complete blood count (with additional blood being stored for possible future determinations of homocysteine or CRP levels), as well as a urine sample for routine urinalysis and steroids screening, determination of gross anthropometrics, and measurement of brachial endothelial function by flow-mediated vasodilation. The subject will then go to the gym to perform a specific weight lifting regimen, during which blood pressures are monitored. Within one hour of completing the exercise routine, subjects will be reassessed for endothelial function, and a second blood sample is drawn. GCRC space is requested for study visits. Nursing assistance is requested for blood draws, vital sign collections, and administration of nitroglycerin if ordered. Biostatistics will assist with the analysis of collected data, while the Core Laboratory will determine serum lipids. GCRC support is also requested for CBC and steroid testing.
