RESPIRATORY AND AROUSAL PATTERS IN NORMAL CHILDHOOD SLEEP

Sleep disorders are common In children and can lead to severe consequences including neuropsychological disturbances, growth problems, and cardiovascular complications. Although pediatric sleep programs are springing up all across the country, little is known about normal sleep in children. Sleep patterns change with age, therefore, adult sleep indexes are inadequate for measuring sleep problems in the developing child. Normal data for children is sparse, with only one study on a small number of children with a very wide age range. Previous data on normal children determined the expected apnea index (number of apnea events per hour), yet what is most frequently reported in sleep laboratories is the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), a combination of respiratory disturbances. Normal values for the AHI are unknown in children. Equally important are normal values for arousal index, periodic breathing, and percentage of paradoxical breathing, thought to be a sign of partial obstruction. Since treatment of sleep abnormalities is costly, and the cost of missing sleep problems is great, determination of what is normal is essential. Our specific aim is to describe the percentiles of respiratory and arousal indices for children aged 2-5 years.
