This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Recent studies on proteins in blood have demonstrated subtle changes in the protein profile between individuals that do have and individuals that do not have breast cancer. The primary goal of this clinical trial is to determine whether blood proteins are altered in patients with breast cancer and how long it takes for the alteration to normalize following surgical treatment of breast cancer. In the future, this may be a very important test to determine the staging of cancer and the effectiveness of breast cancer treatment. In this clinical study, the surgeon or a blood drawing technician will remove a sample of blood. A total of about 10 to 15 milliliters of blood will be removed and processed specifically per protocol. This will occur before surgery and additionally after surgery at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and monthly for 6 months after surgery (8 draws in total). The goal of this trial is to determine the presence of changes in the protein profile in blood. The objectives of this trial are: Determine the prevalence of breast cancer type serum protein profile in breast cancer patients prior to surgery. Determine the time course of normalization of serum protein profile from cancer-type to normal-type
