英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A prospective cohort study to establish the relationship between the presence of asthma and markers of disease activity in the upper airway. There is a close pathophysiological relationship between the upper and lower airway disease that occurs in asthma. However, not all asthmatics report rhinitis/sinusitis: we anticipate those without symptoms may simply have subclinical disease. We will establish if upper airway disease is a characteristic of all asthmatics, by measuring inflammatory markers and functional changes in the upper airway of asthmatics with and without symptoms of upper airway disease. We will compare asthmatics to normal non-asthmatic subjects. We will also measure inflammatory markers and functional changes in the lower airway to determine if these measures correlate with markers of upper airway disease activity.
