This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The anti-phospholipid syndrome is characterized by the presence of antibodies against phospholipids associated with a coagulopathy (hypercoagulable state) with both venous and arterial thromboses. The cause is unknown and the responsible antibodies are not totally clear. This is a proposal to collect sera, DNA, and relevant clinical information from 1000 patients with the syndrome, 2000 SLE patients with the antibodies but without thrombosis, and to establish a database to better understand risk factors. This is a poorly understood phenomenon, and this registry and sample collection could be an invaluable resource for investigators in this area. Access is regulated by an appropriate committee. The study has been initiated, and enrollment continues. Results are not yet available.
