ACTG A5163: ALENDRONATE IN HIV SUBJECTS WITH DECREASED BONE MINERAL DENSITY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. With the chronicity of HIV-related disease having been achieved, osteopenia has become a problem in a variable percentage of afflicted individuals. This is a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to assess the safety and efficacy of once-weekly bisphosphonate administration on osteopenia in men receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy. It will document the efficacy and safety of an intervention with Alendronate plus calcium in a double-blind fashion in reversing/arresting the degree of osteopenia at 48 weeks. Subjects continue to be enrolled on this study. No results are available yet.
