EFFECTS OF THE SOUTH BEACH DIET ON HEALTH OUTCOMES

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Low carbohydrate diets are a popular form of nutritional therapy for obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Currently, the South Beach Diet is a popular weight reduction program recommended for people with insulin resistance. The South Beach diet plan curtails consumption of highly processed carbohydrates. There are no data on patient's compliance with the plan. Furthermore, the efficacy of the diet to promote improvements in body composition, metabolic parameters, and dietary intake has not been empirically tested. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the South Beach Diet to promote improvements in health outcomes among people with the metabolic syndrome. Baseline data collection will occur followed by instruction in phase I of the diet. A second round of data collection will occuring 2-3 weeks from baseline upon completion of phase I of the diet. Then, participants will be instructed in phase II of the diet and final data collection will occur 3 months from baseline.
