ELECTRICAL STIMULATION FOR STROKE SHOULDER PAIN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a pivotal study of percutaneous stimulation to treat chronic stroke shoulder pain. A total of 80 subjects with moderate-to-severe chronic shoulder pain will be enrolled. Approximately 30 subjects are anticipated to be enrolled at The MetroHealth System. The subjects will be randomly assigned to receive either percutaneous (PENS) or surface (TENS) stimulation. PENS will use wire electrodes inserted in the shoulder muscles to provide stimulation 6 hours daily for 6 weeks. TENS will use patch electrodes attached to the shoulder skin to provide stimulation according to routine clinical practice. Pain intensity, pain interference with function and quality-of-life will be assessed using standardized measurement instruments
