PERCUTANEOUS ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION FOR LOW BACK PAIN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a pilot study of percutaneous stimulation to treat chronic low back pain. A total of 20 subjects with moderate-to-severe chronic lumbar/sacral spine pain will be enrolled. Approximately 10 subjects will be randomly assigned to receive percutaneous stimulation delivered via temporary implanted wire electrodes in the low back region. Approximately 10 subjects will be randomly assigned to receive surface stimulation delivered via commercial self-adhering electrodes attached to the low back region. Both groups will receive a total of 6-hour stimulation per day for 6 weeks and will be followed up for 6 months. Pain intensity/interference, back-pain-specific disability, and quality-of-life will be assessed using standardized measurement instruments. The outcomes from the two groups will be analyzed and compared to estimate the effect size and the superiority of the percutaneous to the surface treatment.
