This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Neuroscience grant proposed two major goals: (1) to support neuroscience research and training at the University of Vermont (UVM) and (2) to promote the research development of junior neuroscience faculty. A key function of the center was to develop a mentoring program for junior neuroscience faculty. This mentoring program helped three of the initial five project directors obtain R01 support for aspects of the initial COBRE supported projects. A fourth junior PI obtained an R21 award to initiate studies separate from his initial COBRE project. COBRE funds also supported pilot projects for five other junior neuroscience investigators during the past year and provided support for laboratory development of two new faculty. Two multi-user research facilities, the Cellular/Molecular Biology Core and Imaging/Physiology Core, continued to be supported by the COBRE grant. These facilities provided access to research tools that are critical to the junior faculty projects and supported research activities of other neuroscientists. The COBRE award supported activities of a Translational Core designed to facilitate the interaction between basic and clinical neuroscientists. This Core supported a year-out research experience for a medical student and surgical resident and provided a course, entitled the Biological Basis of Neurological Disease, for graduate students, residents and faculty. The COBRE enhanced the infrastructure for neuroscience research by supporting a third plenary lecture and by co-sponsoring with the local Vermont Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience an off-campus neuroscience retreat. This retreat consisted of oral presentations by UVM neuroscientists and a lecture by a visiting internationally-recognized neuroscientist. The COBRE award also facilitated the development of a University-wide Neuroscience Graduate Program, which will enroll six students in the Fall of 2006.
