This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. My main research focus during the past year and since joining the COBRE has been to study the pathophysiology of abnormal cardiac excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling and impaired cell survival/signaling in diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and aging. My work focuses on whole heart, single ventricular myocyte function, cell culture, intracellular calcium homeostasis and various subcellular signaling pathways related to nitric oxide and various kinds of cell stress. Cellular physiology combined with molecular biology, transgene and gene transfer techniques are used to understand the mechanisms of action under these disease states.
