This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The project aims at the calibration of the theoretical Dynamic Thermal Damage Model (DTDM) and to determine the efficacy of the Laser Hyperthermia (LHT) treatment to treat superficial malignant tumors on an animal model (Balb/C mice). During the summer of 2004 (the duration of the subproject), we will primarily concentrate on the LHT work using a Diomed Diode laser. Thermal probes (IR Thermal Camera, Thermocouples) will yield the local temperature (fiber tip zone), the surface temperature and the average tumor temperature during laser hyperthermia therapy. Quantitative histology will be performed to quantify the thermal damage profile. The DTDM model will be calibrated in light of the predictions of the temperature field of the tumor, damage profile, and its comparison with the experimental damage data (histology). The validity of the model will be ascertained to predict the LHT damage. The major purpose of the DTDM is to calculate the amount of damage due to hyperthermia in combined LHT and PDT treatments.
