英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this project is to expand previous research in the use of Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for bone replacement, augmentation, and spacing in orthopedic surgery. The strategy applied to this research is to conduct finite element analysis (FEA) and heat transfer modeling (HTM) for several case scenarios of femoral or total hip arthroplasty (THA). With more than 125,000 total hip arthroplasty procedures undertaken each year in the United States, in order to alleviate the symptoms of trauma or degeneration of the hip it, is very important to analyze this surgical procedure from an engineering point of view. Many THA procedures are still being done using PMMA as an agent to solidify the bone with the femoral stem component in which it is expected to alleviate symptoms for about 10-years in most cases. These PMMA bone cements generate considerable heat, reaching temperatures of over 115oC, between 300 and 800 seconds after mixing with a liquid chemical hardener. Also, depending upon the curing method, different hardening properties are attained. Based upon these characteristics, we plan to investigate both the heat/temperature and force/stress phenomena a cemented total hip arthroplasty undergoes using three-dimensional computer simulations of an average size femoral hip replacement.
