RECRUIT ACADEMIC FACULTY AND DEVELOP RESEARCH PROGRAM IN BIOINFORMATICS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The focus of our effort in this initiative was to hire a person with a solid background in computer science and a well rounded background in the biological sciences. We were successful when Dr. Guylaine Poisson joined our department in January 2005. Dr. Poisson has both a B.S. and M.S. in Biology and a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Her thesis work was focused on BPI-anchored protein prediction by machine learning and Microarrays data analysis. In addition to this research background, she has a wealth of experience in the private sector as a senior bioinformatician at the Genomic Research Enterprise of Warnex Inc. in Laval Quebec and as a microscopy researcher at Sema Analyses Microscopiques in Montreal, Quebec. To complement Dr. Poisson's background, we have hired Dr. Susanna Still, a neuroscientist who has a strong background in machine learning. In addition, we have recently concluded a successful search for two additional tenure track faculty. Dr. Henri Casanova will join us in August 2005. His background is in high performance computing and his research will support the use of supercomputers for bioinformatics research. In addition, Dr. Kyungim Baek will join us in August 2005. Her research on computer vision and her background in computer graphics will add to our data visualization capabilities in support of bioinformatics research.
