This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The NIH INBRE Equipment Grant will be used to support biomedical research and to enhance undergraduate instruction in the related sciences. A number of items have been purchased to enhance the capabilities of SWOSU faculty currently supported by INBRE grants and to develop research capabilities not presently on campus. The following items were, or are in the process of being purchased: (1) Q-6 Emission Channel Option for Quantmaster Fluorimeter - The addition of a second channel will allow all wavelengths of light to be selectivity collected through long-pass or band-pass filters, enhancing its sensitivity to the intrinsic fluorescence of proteins by orders of magnitude. (2) A refrigerated bath is required for performing low-temperature reactions accompanying standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., ligation reactions), and for maintaining a thermo-stable environment for a variety of instrumentation. (3-5) Incubator-Shaker, Speed Vac and Gene Pulser Xcell Eukaryotic System - These items will enhance research in microbiology and genetics. (6-7) Inverted Microscope and Laminar Flow, Class II, BSLA2 Biosafety Cabinet ? These items will be used in the Tissue Culture Laboratory under development at SWOSU. This lab will be available to all scientists on campus employing tissue cultures in their research. The Laminar Flow hood is necessary to both prevent exposure of sterile tissue cultures to sources of bacteria and fungi during manipulations and to ensure that tissue samples will not contaminate the laboratory environment. The Inverted microscope will be used for cell counting. (8) Large Format Poster Size Printer ? This printer will be used to print high quality color posters for presentation at scientific meetings. It will be available to both faculty and undergraduate student researchers.
