This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary objective of the AASK (African-American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension) is to determine prospectively the course of kidney function and risk factors for kidney progression in African-Americans with hypertensive kidney who receive recommended antihypertensive therapy. A second objective is to determine the occurrence of cardiovascular disease and assess its risk factors. Ultimately data from the AASK Cohort Study should enhance our understanding of the risk factors and processes that determine the progression of kidney disease. Such results might lead to new strategies that delay or prevent ESRD.
